Russian scientists identify plants with potential for treating diabetes

Researchers analysed more than 200 sources from the past 35 years in international databases

Researchers from Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (IKBFU), together with colleagues from other Russian universities, conducted a meta-analysis that could help study and obtain antidiabetic compounds from plants in the future. These compounds could be used to create products for the food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. This was reported on the university's website, a partner of TV BRICS.

The study found that the familiar plants commonly found across Russia – silver birch, oak, milk thistle, three-lobed beggarticks, stinging nettle and common dandelion – have potential for treating diabetes. The researchers reached these conclusions after analysing and systematising more than 200 sources from the past 35 years in international databases.

As part of the research, the specialists also selected candidate plants for developing natural ingredients for food products, biologically active food supplements and medicines aimed at preventing type 2 diabetes.

“The advantage of our findings is that the review does not simply describe disparate data but provides systematic information on plant compounds that are candidates for the development of antidiabetic agents, their mechanisms of action at the cellular and molecular levels, as well as the plant species found in Russia that synthesise the target compounds,” said Lyubov Dyshlyuk, Head of the Laboratory of Microbiology and Biotechnology at Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University.

She added that the review could serve as a basis for future applied research and save time for other scientists working on related topics. According to the expert, the findings of the meta-analysis could improve the efficiency of developing natural antidiabetic agents that could serve as an alternative to synthetic medicines and help reduce the side effects of treatment.
