Saudi Arabia initiates world largest renewable energy study

The project concerns the study of territories with a total area of 850,000 square kilometres


The world's largest study on renewable energy will be held in Saudi Arabia, as reported by Arab News. The publication notes that it is planned to install 1,200 measuring stations.

The Kingdom’s Energy Minister, Abdulaziz Al-Saud, said that this project is unprecedented in its scale and is aimed at determining the optimal locations for the placement of solar and wind energy facilities.

The official emphasised the global significance of the initiative, saying that no other country has conducted a geographical study of this scale. The high-tech stations will record direct solar radiation, diffuse horizontal radiation, levels of dust and pollutants in the atmosphere, ambient temperature, rainfall, humidity and atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction.

The plan is to utilise artificial intelligence in assessing sites as the most or least suitable for hosting renewable energy.

The initiative is in line with the Kingdom's goal of having around 50 per cent of the country's electricity generated by green methods by 2030.
