Smart lane scheme improves road safety on Malaysia’s national highways
Safety assessments show a significant decline in accidents at pilot locations, alongside smoother traffic flow during peak periods
The implementation of smart lanes on Malaysia’s national highways has contributed to a noticeable reduction in road accidents and improved traffic management at several key locations. This is reported by BERNAMA, a partner of TV BRICS.
According to official safety assessments, accident rates on selected routes have declined by up to 22 per cent, while some sections recorded reductions of more than 74 per cent.
The Minister of Works Alexander Nanta Linggi said that overall accident levels within smart lane zones remain low despite heavy traffic volumes. The initiative, which allows temporary use of emergency lanes by light vehicles during peak hours and festive periods, has helped ease congestion without compromising safety.
Authorities continue to closely monitor traffic conditions through surveillance systems and coordination with relevant agencies to ensure compliance and prevent misuse, particularly during periods of increased travel.
As part of a longer-term approach, the government is advancing infrastructure upgrades, including phased road widening projects and improvements to traffic dispersal systems. These measures are aimed at supporting safer and more efficient travel on major highways, especially during seasonal traffic surges.
