UAE launches new low-carbon buses

The initiative aims to improve people's well-being, strengthen Dubai's global competitiveness as a centre for international events

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a major deal worth AED1.1 billion (US$29,9 million) to purchase 636 new low-emission buses. The decision is in line with Dubai's sustainable development strategy and aims to improve the quality of public transport in the city. This is reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.

The new buses meet European emission standards and include 40 electric buses, which will be the first in the UAE.

RTA plans to use these buses to expand its transport coverage, improve service quality and increase the share of public transport journeys to 25 per cent by 2030.

Among the key features of the new buses are:

  • Eco-friendliness: meeting standards of the European specifications for low carbon emissions and having electric buses, contributing to the UAE's goal of zero emissions by 2050;

  • Safety: driver behaviour monitoring system, automatic passenger counting system and electronic driver identity authentication system;

  •  Comfort: comfortable seats, adjustable seat belts in family areas, and a sleek design.

This deal is an important step in Dubai's development as a modern and sustainable city, where public transport is becoming the preferred choice for residents and visitors.
