China celebrates Lantern Festival

The country's residents welcome the occasion with numerous events

The Lantern Festival, or Yuanxiao Festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar and marks the conclusion of the Spring Festival.

In 2025, the Lantern Festival falls on 12 February. On this day, the streets of China are illuminated by the glow of colourful lanterns in various shapes and sizes, while the sounds of gongs and drums accompany mesmerising dragon and lion dances. Warm and fragrant yuanxiao dumplings fill homes with cosiness and bring families the joy of reunion.

The people of China celebrate the Lantern Festival with numerous events. For instance, in Liancheng County, Fujian Province, one of the most spectacular sights is the display of paper dragons stretching several hundred metres in length. These dragons parade through the streets to the accompaniment of fireworks, drumbeats, and folk performances. The celebration culminates in the ritual burning of the dragon by the river – a tradition symbolising the expulsion of evil spirits and the hope for a prosperous year ahead.

One such dragon, measuring 150 metres in length, was crafted by 30 artisans over 1,500 hours, according to China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS. It was transported to Beijing to adorn local festivities.

In Dalian, Liaoning Province, residents and visitors participated in another special folk ritual – releasing water lanterns. As night fell, around 400 biodegradable paper lanterns were set afloat, while the sky was lit up with dazzling fireworks, and participants made wishes as they launched their lanterns.

Equally impressive was the celebration in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, where traditional dragon lanterns were replaced with fish-shaped lanterns, symbolising the region’s deep connection to the fishing industry.

The Lantern Festival remains one of the most visually stunning events in China. It blends ancient traditions with modern elements, drawing millions of people to take part in its vibrant and memorable festivities.
