Egypt asserts its leading position in solar and wind power generation in the MENA region

Egypt has asserted its leading position in solar and wind power generation in the Middle East and North Africa, according to the latest Global Energy Monitor report. According to the report, Egypt ranks first with a total capacity of 3.5 gigawatts, surpassing the United Arab Emirates (2.6 gigawatts), Morocco (1.9 gigawatts), Jordan (1.7 gigawatts) and Saudi Arabia (0.78 gigawatts). This is reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.
The achievement is linked to Egypt's ambitious plan to generate 42 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035. Head of Sustainable Energy at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce and president of Egypt's Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA), Ayman Haiba, expressed confidence in the country's strategy. He stated “We are determined to harness clean energy sources,”
The plan is to source 42% of the national grid's energy capacity from renewable sources by 2035, including 22% from solar panels, 14% from wind power, 4% from concentrated solar power and 2% from hydropower.
Recently completed 80% of the construction of the Benban solar power station, a project with a planned capacity of 2,000 megawatts. The companies have already completed 1600 megawatts and the remaining part is in the process of realisation of the said project.
