Egyptian Shama village receives international environmental certification

The region becomes an example of sustainable development

The village of Shama in Egypt has become the first in the country to receive the Tarsheed Green Rural Communities certification, recognising its compliance with strict environmental standards. The achievement is the result of the government's Green Village initiative under the Hayah Karima project, which aims to raise environmental standards in rural Egypt. This is reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

The Tarsheed certificate, one of the world's most respected environmental certificates, evaluates villages on various criteria, including water management, waste management, energy efficiency, and environmental awareness.

The Egyptian Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, called the achievement a testament to Egypt's commitment to sustainable development. She emphasised the importance of partnerships with civil society and the private sector in implementing such projects, hinting that Shama's model will be used to develop other villages under the project.

There are currently 30 projects underway in Shama, including building new schools, upgrading public services, and improving water and sanitation infrastructure.

Shama's success demonstrates that Egypt is serious about implementing sustainable practices in its rural areas, creating a cleaner and more prosperous environment for all its citizens.
