Food and Agriculture Organisation of UN endorses inclusion of fisheries and aquaculture and family farming in this year’s G20 priorities
This is emphasising their importance for global nutrition
At the G20 Agriculture Ministers meeting in Brazil, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) Director-General Qu Dongyu emphasised the need for sustainable development of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors to meet growing global food demand and address nutrient deficiencies, especially in developing countries.
“The FAO Blue Transformation strategy aims to ensure aquatic food systems continue feeding the world’s growing population,” he said.
The meeting adopted the Declaration of the G20 Ministerial Group on Agriculture, which formally recognised the FAO Blue Transformation Roadmap 2022-2030 as a key framework for achieving long-term sustainability in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. This is reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.
Seafood currently provides more than 3.3 billion people with at least 20 per cent of their average per capita intake of animal protein, as well as important micronutrients. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector in the world, supporting about 600 million people.
