Indonesian Foreign Minister invites his Russian counterpart to Jakarta

On 19 June, Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected to meet with Indonesian leader Prabowo Subianto

Russian and Indonesian Foreign Ministers, Sergey Lavrov and Sugiono, held talks in Moscow. Following the meeting, they held a press conference.

Lavrov noted that the countries cooperate closely in the international arena.

"We are pleased that Indonesia has joined BRICS as a full member. We emphasised that our joint work within this framework will contribute to strengthening the multipolar principles of world politics and economics"

According to him, the Russian side is ready to expand supplies of energy resources, agricultural products and fertilisers to the Indonesian market. He also stated the need to support the growth of trade turnover between the countries, which reached US$4.3 billion.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry added that Moscow is counting on the early signing of a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). In addition, he said that the Russian state corporation for atomic energy is ready to participate in the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country.

Lavrov paid special attention to relations between the countries in the field of education. In particular, he announced Russia's readiness to increase the quota for Indonesian students and to support the growing interest of the republic's citizens in learning Russian.

In turn, Sugiono expressed his hope that the Russian minister would visit Jakarta.

"I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Sergey Lavrov, as well as to the government and people of Russia. Thank you for the warm welcome you have given me and my delegation," he said.

The Foreign Ministers held talks ahead of the meeting between the leaders of the two countries, Vladimir Putin and Prabowo Subianto, which will take place on 19 June in St. Petersburg.
