South Africa hosts exhibition named after Russian photojournalist

It can be visited until 16 March

The Castle of Good Hop in South Africa hosts an exhibition of works by the winners of the international photo contest named after Russian photojournalist Andrey Stenin. Aleksey Malenko, Consul General of Russia in Cape Town, took part in the opening ceremony.

The diplomat said that the exhibition aroused great interest in South Africa, and the contest contributes to strengthening cultural exchange between the countries. In addition, the diplomat reminded that Russia and South Africa are BRICS partners and share the common goal of sustainable development.

“BRICS is not purely a political and economic group, it is also a bridge for cultural exchange, which plays a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding,” Malenko said, according to Independent Online (IOL).

The exhibition is organised by Independent Media, IOL, and a partner of TV BRICS African News Agency (ANA) with the support of Sputnik News Agency. Chairman of Independent Media, Iqbal Surve at the event noted the important role of photojournalism in the world.

"A picture tells a thousand words. [...] There’s always different sides to a story, but the one thing that always brings us together in a way is photographs" he emphasised.

The Andrey Stenin International Press Photo Contest is held annually and is open to young photojournalists aged 18 to 33. Exhibitions of the winners during the existence of the contest have been seen in dozens of countries around the world, including China, Egypt, Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and other states. The exhibition in Cape Town is open until 16 March.
