South Africa plans to accelerate renewable energy development

The head of the country's energy ministry called for improving the green energy programme

The South African leadership intends to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources. This was stated by Kgosientsho David Ramokgopa, South African Minister of Electricity and Energy, at a seminar on green energy in Midrand, reports Pretoria News, a partner of TV BRICS.

He stressed that accelerating the renewable energy programme is a strategically important issue for South Africa. He said the country needs to step up the process of building capacity and quickly address administrative challenges related to permits and licenses.

"We really want the industry to thrive for us to run the most ambitious and successful of all renewable programmes from a public procurement point of view," Ramokgopa said.

He also noted the importance of building confidence in the renewable energy system, citing the need to address past challenges that arose in the previous phases of the programme.

Earlier, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed into law a bill to regulate the country's energy industry. The new regulations introduce a number of significant changes to South Africa's fuel and energy complex.
