South Africa's total solar PV capacity grows by 11.9% in 2024

The solar industry has become an important economic driver, creating jobs, and fostering skills development

The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) has summarised the 2024 growth in the solar industry. Marked by gradual growth, notable achievements, this year has laid the foundation for a brighter and greener future, reports Pretoria News, a partner of TV BRICS.

The country's total solar PV capacity grew to 8.97 GW, an 11.9 per cent increase from 2023.

"With almost 500 MW of utility-scale projects under construction and 375 MW scheduled to come online in 2025, the future of solar in South Africa looks incredibly promising," said Rethabile Melamu, the CEO of SAPVIA.

Looking to the future, SAPVIA foresees significant changes in the energy storage sector, as well as a growing interest in solar plus storage systems, says Melamu.
