China expands higher education with 29 new undergraduate majors in AI
The move brings the total number of undergraduate majors in China to 845
China’s Ministry of Education has introduced 29 new undergraduate majors in a significant update to the country’s higher education programme catalogue, as reported by Global Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
The additions span areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), intelligent molecular engineering, carbon neutrality science, marine technology, and health and medical security.
Several of the new majors align with China’s strategic priorities. These include regional and country studies to support global engagement and engineering disciplines focused on carbon neutrality, contributing to environmental sustainability goals.
The move brings the total number of undergraduate majors in China to 845, distributed across 93 disciplinary categories, with over 62,800 undergraduate programme delivery points nationwide.
Areas likely to see further expansion include quantum information science, energy storage technologies, and biomanufacturing.
