China to open world’s tallest bridge in Huajiang Grand Canyon
The infrastructure will claim two world records
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, set to be the world’s tallest bridge, will officially open to traffic on 28 September, the Guizhou Provincial Government confirmed at a press conference this week. This is reported by Global Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
The bridge measures 2,890 metres in length with a main span of 1,420 metres. Rising 625 metres above the river, it will claim two world records: the tallest bridge and the largest span bridge ever built in a mountainous area.
Engineers relied on advanced technologies including the sophisticated navigation satellite system, drone support, BIM modelling, intelligent monitoring systems, ultra-high-strength materials, and innovative building techniques.
According to the report, the bridge successfully completed its final load test on 25 August. The procedure involved 96 trucks weighing around 3,300 tonnes, positioned across the deck in batches to measure displacement and stress on the main span, towers, cables, and suspenders.
