Experts call for increased investment in meteorology in Africa

Experts attending the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (Amcomet) have called for increased investment in this key issue for the region

At the virtual meeting, the experts discussed strategies to strengthen the delivery of weather, water, climate and early warning services to all users, from decision makers to local communities, in the public interest. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

They agreed that more investment is vital to achieve these goals.

“Africa faces a major threat: climate change, which has devastating consequences. Experts point out that our continent is one of the most vulnerable regions of the world in the face of increasingly frequent and intense weather events,” said Jean Ernest Massena, Cameroon's Minister of Transport.

According to Josefa Leonel Correia, African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, there is also a need to strengthen meteorological observation networks, increase investment in meteorology, and improve the effectiveness of institutions.

The biennial Amcomet sessions provide a unique ministerial forum to formulate policies and recommendations to enhance the contribution of national hydrological services to sustainable socio-economic development and regional cooperation.
