Heavy rains in Vietnam cause deaths and missing people

Protracted rains in Dien Bien province in northwest Vietnam have caused floods and landslides. At least 12 people have died or are missing as a result, reports Vietnam News Agency (VNA), a partner of TV BRICS.

As of the morning of 1 August, three people have been confirmed dead: two were trapped under the rubble of a landslide and another was swept away by floodwaters. Nine people are reported missing.

The disaster damaged dozens of houses. In one village, 11 dwellings were completely destroyed and the neighbourhood was isolated. In other settlements, houses were flooded and access of rescue services was hampered.

The floods also paralysed traffic on key highways. In some areas, roads have been blocked by rocks, trees and soil.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has instructed emergency services to focus their efforts on dealing with the disaster. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

Rescue teams have been sent to the affected areas. According to the provincial hydrometeorological station, heavy precipitation continues in the region. Moderate to heavy rains are expected in the next 24 hours, in some places – more than 70 mm of precipitation. Authorities urge residents to take precautions.
