Indonesia highlights ethical and inclusive AI governance

Jakarta outlines national strategy and calls for Global South cooperation at UNESCO AI ethics summit in Bangkok

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital has reaffirmed its commitment to embedding ethical principles and inclusivity into its artificial intelligence (AI) policies, with Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria representing the country at the UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence in Bangkok. This is reported by Antara News.

Speaking at the international gathering, Patria underscored Indonesia’s active efforts to translate the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI (2021) into concrete policy measures. He noted that the government has gone beyond endorsing global principles by integrating them into the country’s developing regulatory framework.

"Indonesia has integrated UNESCO's AI ethics and inclusivity principles into real policy formulation and governance," Patria said in a statement.

Among those steps, Patria highlighted the near-finalisation of an Ethics-based Artificial Intelligence Roadmap developed through multi-stakeholder engagement, and the completion of a National AI Readiness Assessment (AI-RAM), which maps sectoral strengths and risks linked to AI development. A formal regulatory framework for AI is expected to be issued in the near future.

He called for deeper cooperation among countries of the Global South to confront these shared issues. For Indonesia, international cooperation, particularly with the Global South, is not merely about sharing technology, but, more fundamentally, about sharing responsibility for ethical and inclusive AI. "We must also ensure that no country is left behind in the transformative AI transition," he added.

The forum, running from 24–27 June in Bangkok, brings together policymakers, academics, and industry experts from over 190 countries to evaluate progress made since the adoption of the UNESCO AI ethics guidelines in 2021.
