Indonesia transforms universities into centres of research and innovation

The country’s higher education sector supports 9.96 million active students and 303,067 lecturers

Indonesia is intensifying efforts to transform its universities into leading centres of research and innovation, as reported by Vietnam News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto emphasised this strategic shift during a meeting with rectors from state and private universities across the country.

The government has allocated approximately US$117 million to enhance universities' research capabilities and academic excellence, aligning with Indonesia’s long-term vision of competing with developed nations. A key aspect of this initiative is the improvement of lecturer qualifications, with a focus on increasing the number of doctoral graduates to bolster higher education standards.

Currently, Indonesia hosts 4,416 universities, including 125 state institutions, 2,812 private universities, and 170 higher education service institutions.

The country’s higher education sector supports 9.96 million active students and 303,067 lecturers.

To further nurture top-tier talent, Indonesia has launched the Garuda Programme across four specialised centres. This initiative is designed to equip students with world-class skills, ensuring they meet global recruitment demands and contribute to Indonesia’s emergence as a knowledge-driven economy.
