The measure is aimed at offering tourists a safer and more convenient alternative for payments
Iran has officially authorised its banks to issue debit cards for foreign tourists and non-resident visitors, marking a new step towards modernising the country’s tourism infrastructure and reducing reliance on cash transactions. This is reported by Press TV, a partmer of TV BRICS.
The Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has formally issued a decree to both state-owned and private banks, allowing them to provide debit cards denominated in the national currency, the rial, to foreign visitors.
Under the new system, international tourists will be able to exchange their foreign currencies and have the funds credited to a dedicated debit card account. Upon the expiry of the card, any remaining balance will be converted back into foreign currency and returned to the visitor.
The new measure is aimed at offering tourists a safer and more convenient alternative for payments in shops, restaurants, hotels, and other services.
The introduction of debit cards for foreign visitors is part of broader efforts by Iranian authorities to enhance tourism services and financial security, while encouraging transactions through regulated banking channels.
