Malaysia aims to become Southeast Asia’s AI and green tech leader by 2030

The Malaysian government plans to focus on adopting local technological innovations to drive economic growth

Malaysia has set a clear roadmap to become the leading digital economy and green technology hub in Southeast Asia by 2030, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced, according to BERNAMA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Speaking in Parliament during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030), Anwar highlighted that the country must seize the "once-in-a-generation" opportunity presented by artificial intelligence (AI). He stressed Malaysia’s ambition to emerge as a globally influential player in AI, digital technology, and renewable energy industries.

The Malaysian government plans to focus on adopting local technological innovations to drive economic growth, particularly through the development of strategic digital assets such as AI, data analytics, and government digital systems. The plan also includes intensifying research, development, commercialisation, and innovation activities under the "Made by Malaysia" initiative.

The government also aims to extend 5G coverage to 98 per cent of populated and industrial areas, including rural regions, by 2030. This aligns with its goal of producing at least 5,000 new digital entrepreneurs and integrating AI across multiple sectors.

Additionally, the government will promote AI literacy from an early age, expand intellectual property, inject strategic funding, and foster cross-sector collaboration.
