More than 100 thousand artefacts are found at a Paleolithic site in China

The age of the excavated site ranges from 50,000 to 70,000 years old

Chinese archaeologists have discovered more than 100,000 artefacts at the Mengxihe Palaeolithic site in Sichuan Province. Scientists have already ranked the them among the six most important archaeological discoveries of 2023.

People settled in the area to be closer to the River Mersey. Over the time, the cultural layer descended beneath the water level, leading to the preservation of numerous organic materials in the moist soil. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Additionally, over 60,000 organic remains such as plant seeds, fruits and spores were found in 2023.

Detailed analysis by experts revealed the evidence of fire utilization, stone shaping, wood carving, and polishing techniques within the artifacts.

In 2023, scientists conducted large-scale excavations here, during which more than 105,000 stone, wooden and bone tools were found. They also found more than 60 thousand organic remains – plant seeds and spores. Having studied the artefacts, the experts found traces of fire, faceting, wood carving and polishing.
