South Africa to host key events for Marine Protected Areas Day 2025
Nation marks fifth annual MPA Day with coastal clean-ups, research, and public engagement
On 1 August 2025, countries around the world will observe Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day with a series of coordinated events aimed at raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation. This is reported by DUrbanTV, a partner of TV BRICS.
Now in its fifth year, MPA Day is supported by over 90 partner organisations, with more than 80 activities scheduled in 25 countries. South Africa, where the initiative originated, will host a significant portion of these events.
Events will include beach clean-ups, guided coastal walks, research and monitoring exercises, marine biodiversity tours, art and educational projects, documentary screenings, and online sessions.
Participants will have opportunities to engage directly with marine environments, learn about ocean conservation, and contribute to data collection on marine health.
Several initiatives will focus on youth involvement, with workshops and hands-on activities designed to build environmental awareness and connect young people to the ocean. Others will involve scientists and conservationists conducting fieldwork and engaging the public in citizen science.
