Zimbabwe launches AI-powered grain silos to boost food security

The country aims to become a leading food supplier in Southern Africa

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has inaugurated a new complex of AI-powered grain silos in Mutare, designed to store up to 56,000 tonnes of grain, according to ZBC News, a TV BRICS partner.

The modern facilities are equipped with digital monitoring systems, automated grain processing, and advanced quality control laboratories. These technologies are expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve storage efficiency, and strengthen national food security.

“It is pleasing and a source of pride that our national agriculture capabilities and logistical and storage capacity are having a positive impact on the overall economic development of our country. […] The World Food Programme has expressed its readiness to collaborate with us in our quest to become a regional food production, storage and logistics hub,” said President Mnangagwa during the launch.

The initiative also marks the beginning of Zimbabwe’s Agricultural Strategy 2026–2030, aimed at expanding the sector and increasing farmers’ incomes.

Zimbabwe continues to scale up its agricultural capacity: the area of irrigated land has already surpassed 220,000 hectares, with plans to reach 500,000 hectares by 2030.
