African leaders outline unified position ahead of COP30
Calls grow for stronger partnerships and Africa-led green solutions
African leaders convening at the Second Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa urged greater global action and investment to support the continent’s climate priorities and green development. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
The three-day summit, co-hosted by Ethiopia and the African Union (AU), is held under the theme “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development”. It brings together heads of state, ministers, experts, and international partners.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed urged leaders to view Africa as a "continent of solutions.” He called for scaling up climate-smart investments to cut emissions, create jobs, and boost food security.
Kenyan President William Ruto reflected on progress since the Nairobi Declaration of 2023, highlighting advances in green infrastructure, agriculture, and technology. “Two years later, we have come a long way. Our potential is recognised, our voice is heard, and our solutions are being deployed,” he said, while warning against short-term approaches and narrow self-interest.
Despite contributing less than 4 per cent of global carbon emissions, Africa remains among the most vulnerable to climate impacts. Leaders underscored the continent’s potential, citing its renewable energy resources and growing local innovation.
The summit will conclude with the adoption of the Addis Ababa Declaration, presenting a unified African position ahead of COP30 in Brazil.
