Astronomers create first 3D map of Milky Way's interstellar dust characteristics

Scientists have learnt details about star formation, galactic evolution, and the origins of life


Astronomers from China and abroad have revealed the first 3D map detailing the properties of interstellar dust within the Milky Way. This map is set to serve as a crucial tool for astronomical observations, astrochemistry, and research into galaxy evolution. 

Interstellar dust, composed of heavy elements, plays a crucial role in both star formation and the circulation of matter throughout the galaxy. Its ability to absorb and scatter light creates a dimming effect that significantly impacts astronomical observations. This is reported by China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.

By analysing data, scientists have compiled a catalogue detailing the properties of dust for over 130 million stars, subsequently generating a three-dimensional map extending up to 16,308 light-years from Earth.

This breakthrough highlights the relationship between dust distribution, star formation, and the Milky Way's structure also provides novel insights into the processes governing the development of organic molecules in space. 

As emphasised by lead researcher Zhang Xiangyu, dust is a fundamental component for planet formation and the chemical evolution of galaxies. This new map paves the way for further investigations into astrochemistry, star formation, the galactic carbon cycle, and even the origins of life itself.
