Brazilian state sets new sugarcane harvest record
Minas Gerais has set a new agricultural milestone in the 2024/25 season, processing a record 83.1 million tonnes of sugarcane, which is a 4 per cent increase over the previous harvest. This is reported by Safras News, a partner of TV BRICS.
The historic harvest saw sugar production rise 3.2 per cent to 5.6 million tonnes, while total ethanol output grew 5 per cent to 3.4 million cubic meters, driven by a 13.9 per cent surge in hydrated ethanol production.
Industry leaders attributed the success to improved operational efficiency and strategic adjustments, with mills directing 50 per cent of cane to sugar production.
Academic researcher from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais Mario Campos expressed optimism for the coming season. He also noted that the 83-million-tonne milestone demonstrates the sector's remarkable resilience and emphasised that Minas Gerais is strengthening its position as Brazil's bioenergy leader while driving sustainable development and clean energy innovation.
