BRICS Agriculture Working Group holds first meeting to advance sustainable farming

A preparatory document outlined the foundation for a joint declaration to be issued at the BRICS Agriculture Ministers' Meeting in April

The BRICS Agriculture Working Group held its first meeting, coordinated by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in collaboration with the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and representatives from other BRICS countries.

Key agenda items for the working group include food security, sustainable agricultural production, trade and infrastructure development, and strategic agreements. Discussions also covered the implementation of electronic certification to enhance traceability and security in agricultural trade.

Following the meetings, a press briefing was led by the Secretary for Trade and International Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Luis Rua. Rua highlighted Brazil’s significant global role in 2025, citing major events such as the BRICS Summit, the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), and the upcoming meeting with African agriculture ministers.

A preparatory document was presented during the meeting, outlining the foundation for a joint declaration to be issued at the BRICS Agriculture Ministers' Meeting in April. Representatives initiated dialogue on crucial challenges, including climate change adaptation, soil degradation, sustainable farming practices, trade expansion, economic inequalities, and food price volatility.

The 2025–2028 action plan under development includes initiatives focused on strengthening aquatic food systems, modernising agricultural practices with low-carbon technologies, restoring degraded land, and promoting bio-based inputs and bioenergy production.
