China and South Africa win their first gold medals at the Paris Olympics

The XXXIII Olympic Games 2024 are being held in France from July 26 to August 11

China became the champion of the 2024 Paris Olympics in the mixed doubles table tennis tournament today, defeating the Democratic People's Republic of Korea 4-2.

Chinese pair Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha overcame the North Korean team, cementing their status as the main favourites to win the title, according to China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.

Earlier in the Olympic campaign, shooters Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao won China's first gold medal in the mixed 10-metre air rifle team event. Lihao, the reigning world record holder, dominated the competition, scoring 252.2 points and setting a new Olympic record.

China continued its dominance in ski jumping, winning two gold medals in Paris. The men's pair of Yang Hao and Lian Junjie executed six perfect dives in the 10-metre platform final, scoring 490.35 points and winning their first Olympic title in the synchronised event.

South Africa's gold medal was another notable achievement. Swimmer Tatjana Smith, 27, won her second Olympic gold medal, winning the 100-metre breaststroke.

From July 26 to August 11, representatives of the BRICS countries competed in athletics, weightlifting, equestrian, swimming, taekwondo, boxing, wrestling, and other disciplines.
