China develops first homegrown space mining robot for asteroid exploration

The prototype has already undergone initial patent reviews

China has unveiled its first domestically developed space mining robot, engineered to navigate the unique challenges of asteroid exploration. This is reported by Global Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

The robot is designed to function in microgravity and traverse the rugged, cratered surfaces of asteroids. The mechanism features an innovative six-legged structure, incorporating three wheeled limbs and three clawed limbs.

This biomimetic design allows it to anchor itself securely in low-gravity environments, overcoming one of the biggest challenges of extraterrestrial mining. To address this, the research team drew inspiration from insect claw-and-spine mechanisms, equipping the robot with a specialised array-style claw system. 

This design enhances its ability to grip surfaces firmly, stabilising itself for sampling and movement across uneven terrain. The combination of wheeled and clawed limbs enables efficient navigation over rocky landscapes, ensuring the robot can reach and extract valuable minerals from asteroid surfaces.

Experts highlighted that these experiments provide data that closely mirrors actual lunar mission results, ensuring that the robot is well-prepared for deployment in future space mining operations.
