China reveals unexpected link between methane emissions and ozone recovery

Findings suggest that methane could have a particularly strong positive influence on ozone recovery in polar regions

A new study by Chinese scientists suggests that rising methane emissions could play a surprising role in accelerating ozone layer recovery, offering fresh insights into global climate dynamics. This is reported by CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.

The research examines the complex atmospheric chemistry of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. While methane contributes to global warming, it also interacts with atmospheric compounds in ways that may support the restoration of the stratospheric ozone layer, according to specialists.

At ground level, it exacerbates climate change, but in the stratosphere, its chemical interactions can contribute to ozone recovery. Understanding this balance is crucial for predicting future ozone trends and shaping environmental policies.

Findings suggest that methane could have a particularly strong positive influence on ozone recovery in polar regions, including the Arctic and Antarctic.

According to the researchers, further refinements to climate models will help policymakers make more informed decisions on balancing ozone protection and greenhouse gas management, ensuring a more comprehensive approach to climate governance and atmospheric science.
