Chinese new technology restores speech and mobility

Chinese-developed system enables paralysed and speech-impaired patients to communicate and control devices with advanced neural technology

A Chinese research team has made a big step forward in brain-machine technology, helping patients with serious brain and nerve problems to communicate and move again. New technologies use a tiny, flexible electrode to read brain signals. It has helped a patient who lost the ability to speak and also allowed paralysed patients to control computers and robot arms. This is reported by CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.

The system uses three main technologies: a small device to process brain signals, wireless communication to send data, and a smart algorithm to understand movements and language. In a recent surgery, doctors used the system on a patient with a disease called Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which had taken away their ability to talk.

After the surgery, the patient started training to use the system and quickly improved. They can now communicate basic sentences like “I want to drink water” or “I’m in a great mood today.” The system is also helping paralysed patients control devices with their thoughts.

This new technology could change how doctors treat brain and nerve diseases like epilepsy, stroke, and spinal cord injuries. Since it doesn’t need to go deep into the brain, it is safer and less damaging than older methods. Experts say it could help many patients in the future, giving them new ways to communicate and move.
