Chinese researchers discover immune cells in peripheral nervous system
The discovery could open new avenues for treating neurological disorders
In a major breakthrough, Chinese scientists have identified microglia – a type of immune cell previously thought to exist only in the brain and spinal cord – within the peripheral nervous system (PNS). This is reported by China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.
The discovery could open new avenues for treating neurological disorders such as nerve injury, abnormal pain, developmental disorders, and viral infections affecting the nerves, the source claims.
Through studies involving humans, monkeys, and pigs, and using advanced research infrastructure in Shenzhen and Kunming, the scientists confirmed the presence of microglia in peripheral nerves – a discovery that challenges long-held assumptions in neuroscience.
This finding reframes understanding of immune regulation in the peripheral nervous system and may lead to the development of novel therapies for hereditary and acquired nerve diseases, experts believe.
