Cuba sends request to join BRICS as partner country

The group is a "symbol of hope" for the countries of the global south, according to a spokesman for the republic's Foreign Ministry

The Cuban leadership has requested BRICS partner state status in a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was announced by Carlos Pereira, Director General for Bilateral Relations of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as reported Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

The Republic sent a request to this effect in a letter to the Russian leader, as the Russian Federation currently holds the presidency of the group.

"BRICS is consolidating its position as a key player in global politics, being a symbol of hope for the countries of the global South," Pereira wrote on social media.

At present, 10 countries are members of the association: Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Iran, China, the UAE, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and South Africa. The main event during Russia's BRICS presidency will be the BRICS summit to be held in Kazan on 22-24 October. Leaders of BRICS+ nations, including Venezuela, have been invited to attend.
