Ethiopia sets up production of textiles by utilising local raw materials

This is according to the Manufacturing Industry Development Institute

The 12th International Scientific Conference on Cotton, Textile and Apparel Value Chain in Africa (CTA-2024) was held at the Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology (EITEX) at Bahir Dar University.

Deputy Director General of Manufacturing Industry Development Institute, Sileshi Lema, spoke about the success of the Made in Ethiopia movement in strengthening the domestic capacity of the industry. This is reported by ENA.

Ethiopia used to spend more than a billion US dollars annually on textile imports, now it produces textiles and garments on a large scale.

Professor Tamerat Tesfaye, Scientific Director at the Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology, said the institute trains professionals and skilled workers to support the industry. 25.6 per cent of the institute's graduates have already started their own businesses, creating new jobs.

"The textile and garment industry is crucial for job creation, economic growth and cultural exchange in Africa," professor Tamerat Tesfaye emphasised.
