First G20 Sherpas meeting under the South African presidency to be held from 9-12 December

From 1 December 2024, the presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20) will pass from Brazil to South Africa. 

South Africa views its G20 presidency as one of the largest national projects, said Marat Berdyev, Ambassador-at-Large of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Successful implementation of this initiative will require the co-ordinated work of government structures and civil society. This is reported by diplomat's social media sources.

The key priorities of the presidency include a focus on elevating the voice of the Global South, with particular attention to the development and strengthening of the international position of African countries. 

"South Africa intends to continue the G20 discussion on reforming global governance, in particular the international financial institutions," he emphasised.

The first meeting of the G20 Sherpas and Sous-Sherpas is scheduled for 9-12 December in Pretoria.
