India's inland waterway freight traffic reaches record level
Authorities plan to increase this figure to 500 million tonnes in 22 years
India's inland waterways freight traffic has reached a record 145.5 million tonnes in FY 2024/25. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.
It is noted that this has been possible due to investments, infrastructure projects and adoption of digital solutions.
Coal, iron ore and its concentrates, sand and ash accounted for the bulk of the traffic – 68 per cent of the total volume. On average, the industry has shown steady growth over the last 11 years, with an average annual rate of 20.86 per cent.
In addition, the number of operating national waterways has increased from 24 to 29 and passenger traffic has increased to 16.1 million over the past year.
The authority has set a target to increase freight traffic on inland waterways to 200 million tonnes by 2030 and 500 million tonnes by 2047.
