India to increase natural gas demand by 60% by 2030
India aims to raise the share of natural gas in the national energy mix to 15 per cent by 2030
India’s natural gas consumption is expected to rise nearly 60 per cent by 2030 as the country pushes forward with its strategy to reduce oil imports and increase reliance on cleaner energy sources, as reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.
India’s broader energy policy aims to raise the share of natural gas in the national energy mix to 15 per cent by 2030, up from the current 6–6.5 per cent. The transition is part of the country's commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, with natural gas being positioned as a key transitional fuel.
The City Gas Distribution (CGD) network is expected to be a major driver of this growth. Significant growth is also expected in the petrochemical sector, supported by improved petroleum intensity and enhanced integration with refinery operations.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is projected to emerge as a transformative fuel in long-haul freight transport. The report anticipates a sharp increase in LNG-powered trucking after 2030, with the potential to replicate successful models adopted in countries like China.
