Iran and Russia prepare roadmap for integrated maritime freight operations via Caspian Sea
The countries to boost sea logistics through new joint initiative
Iran and Russia have agreed to convene a high-level meeting in the Russian port city of Makhachkala within the next two months to operationalise a joint maritime transport consortium, reinforcing bilateral cooperation along the Caspian Sea and the International North–South Transit Corridor (INSTC). This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
The agreement was reached during an official phone conversation between Saeed Rasouli, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, and Dmitry Azarov, Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation.
The upcoming meeting will gather senior officials from Iran, Russia’s Ministry of Transport, Russia’s Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport, and representatives from both countries' private sectors.
Saeed Rasouli emphasised the strategic necessity of enhancing combined sea transport and cargo transit through the Caspian, particularly focusing on containerised freight between Iranian and Russian ports. He called for the immediate activation of the joint maritime transport consortium and highlighted the importance of private sector participation in delivering sustainable outcomes.
According to Rasouli, Iran is prepared to develop a comprehensive maritime cooperation roadmap and a joint operational framework to modernise bilateral sea freight logistics.
