Iran nominates Mashhad city for OIC Tourism Capital 2030 bid

Mashhad has officially been nominated by Iran as its candidate for the title of Tourism Capital of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for 2030, as reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

The nomination was confirmed by Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts following a series of technical assessments and tourism development reviews. The initiative is expected to strengthen the country’s global tourism profile and accelerate investment in infrastructure, hospitality and cultural projects in eastern Iran.

Iranian officials selected Mashhad after evaluating several destinations across the country. The city was chosen for its extensive tourism infrastructure, strong transport connectivity, large-scale accommodation capacity and its growing role as a regional centre for cultural and heritage tourism.

The next stage of the selection process will take place during expert consultations in Tashkent later this year. The winning city is expected to be announced during the meeting of OIC tourism ministers in Doha.

Experts say the potential designation could significantly boost international visitor numbers and position Mashhad among the leading tourism destinations in the broader Eurasian and Middle Eastern regions. The status may also support urban modernisation projects, transport upgrades and new international partnerships in tourism and cultural exchange.

Located in Razavi Khorasan Province, Mashhad is one of Iran’s largest metropolitan areas and an important centre of history, architecture and traditional culture. The city is widely known for its historic landmarks, museums, traditional bazaars, parks and culinary heritage. Nearby attractions include the ancient city of Tus and the mausoleum of the renowned Persian poet Ferdowsi.
