Iran’s handmade carpet exports show first growth in 20 years
Global demand rises for Persian craftsmanship, driven by renewed trade efforts and expanded international outreach across 65 markets
After two decades of decline, Iran’s handmade carpet industry has seen a resurgence, with exports rising by nearly 4 per cent in value during the past Iranian calendar year (ending March 20).
Zahra Kamani, head of the Iran National Carpet Centre, reported that overseas sales reached US$39.7 million, with shipments delivered to 65 countries worldwide. Among the top importers of Iranian carpets last year were the UAE and China, according to Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
Kamani also highlighted a new joint initiative between the Ministry of Industry, Mining, and Trade and the Carpet Centre to elevate the global reputation of Persian handmade carpets. The initiative "aims to enhance the global standing of handmade carpets. With synergy in monetary and banking systems and supportive measures from relevant organisations, further growth in exports is anticipated,” Kamani added.
