Iranian province introduces new drought and cold-resistant wheat varieties

The new strains to strengthen food security in the region

After a decade of dedicated research, agricultural scientists in Markazi Province have successfully developed five new varieties of rainfed wheat designed to thrive in harsh conditions.

These advanced seeds are resistant to drought, cold, and lodging, while also offering higher yields and better disease resistance, according to Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

The new strains, named Nafis, Dehghan, Kian, Shayan, and Hemta, are not only hardy but also mature earlier than traditional varieties. They can produce 20-30 per cent more wheat per hectare, even in areas with limited water or colder climates. Additionally, they contain higher protein levels, making them nutritionally superior.

This breakthrough is particularly significant for Markazi Province, where much of the farmland relies on rainfall rather than irrigation. With climate change affecting weather patterns, these resilient wheat varieties could help stabilise production.

These seeds are being distributed to local farmers, marking a major step forward in sustainable agriculture for the region. The innovation is expected to play a key role in ensuring food security while helping farmers adapt to increasingly unpredictable growing conditions.
