Kazakhstan to develop digital carbon content map for agricultural soils

A methodology for measuring soil carbon content is under development

Kazakhstan is set to create a digital map reflecting soil carbon content as part of its efforts to advance sustainable agriculture and combat land degradation. This is reported by " Kazinform", a partner of TV BRICS.

Azat Sultanov, Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of Agriculture, announced the initiative, highlighting that soil erosion in the country is predominantly driven by natural factors.

Sultanov noted that natural forces such as wind and water erosion, temperature fluctuations, and soil leaching are the primary causes of degradation, while human activities like deforestation and unsustainable farming practices play a secondary role.

To support the carbon farming initiative introduced by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the Ministry of Agriculture has begun developing a Roadmap for Carbon Agriculture, with a focus on monitoring greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration on agricultural lands.

A methodology for measuring soil carbon content is under development, alongside plans for a digital soil carbon content map covering the entire country.
