Scientists implement quantum-secured communication at record distance between China and South Africa

An international team of scientists has for the first time established a real quantum key distribution at a distance of more than 12,900 kilometres, paving the way for global quantum communication

An international team of scientists led by Chinese experts has for the first time established quantum-secured communication over a record distance of more than 12,900 kilometres between China and South Africa. This achievement was realised using the Jinan-1 micro-nano satellite and compact ground stations.

The new experiment demonstrated that encrypted messages can be transmitted using quantum principles, making them "unbreakable" even with the involvement of an outside observer. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

China plans to further develop and expand this technology, including building a low-power satellite network, integrating quantum security with the country's existing satellite internet projects.
