South Africa to attract private investment for development of country’s energy system

The new initiative involves the construction of 14,000 kilometres of new power lines

The Government of South Africa has launched the Independent Transmission Programme, aimed at building new transmission lines with the involvement of private capital. This was announced by the country’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, as reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to him, the initiative will help develop the infrastructure needed for renewable energy projects. He noted that the country already has significant solar and wind power plants, but their potential is not fully utilised due to the lack of transmission lines.

The programme involves the construction of 14,000 kilometres of new transmission lines. It is expected that this will increase the power supply by more than 3,200 MW, which is about 63 per cent of the total capacity of the country’s largest coal-fired power plants.

It is noted that applications from potential project participants will be accepted starting in November this year.
