Thailand and Indonesia elevate relations to strategic partnership
Thailand and Indonesia have officially upgraded their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership during the first visit by an Indonesian head of state to Thailand in two decades.
The announcement was made following high-level talks in Bangkok between Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This is reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
The two leaders met at the Government House under a newly created leaders' consultation mechanism, designed to facilitate sustained dialogue and deepen collaboration across multiple sectors.
The discussions touched upon the strategic role of ASEAN in navigating global economic uncertainties. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to reinforcing ASEAN unity and economic integration in the face of shifting geopolitical dynamics and possible new international trade regulations.
According to the source, Thailand will convene the inaugural ministerial-level Thai-Indonesian Joint Trade Committee later this year to strengthen economic collaboration.
At the end of the meeting, the countries signed a memorandum of understanding on health cooperation, paving the way for increased knowledge-sharing and capacity-building in the health sector.
This visit by President Prabowo coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Thailand.
