UAE unveils new symbol for dirham
The symbol uses the colours of the national flag
The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) has officially unveiled a new symbol for the national currency, the dirham, as well as its digital version. The move is aimed at strengthening the UAE's status as a leading international financial centre. This is reported by Sada El-Balad, a partner of TV BRICS.
The new dirham symbol, as explained by the CBUAE, derived from the English letter "D" (from "dirham"), incorporates two horizontal lines to symbolise the stability of the dirham and uses the colours of the national flag.
A special symbol has been designed for the digital dirham – an image of the physical currency symbol in a circle, also in the colours of the UAE flag.
The digital dirham is scheduled to be launched for the retail sector in the fourth quarter of this year. This central bank digital currency (CBDC) aims to be the digital equivalent of the paper dirham, providing stability and reliability.
