UN centre for sustainable development is launched in Ethiopia

It will conduct research aimed at achieving the SDGs

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network Africa has opened at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. This is reported by Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.

It is specified that the centre will host various educational programmes to train highly qualified professionals. In addition, the office will conduct research aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa.

The UN noted that the decision to locate the office in Addis Ababa is due to the fact that the city is the capital of the African Union and makes a significant contribution to sustainable development on the continent. The representative of the organisation also stressed the high level of training of scientists and scientific research at the university.

Addis Ababa University Acting President Samuel Kifle, said that university already has experience in participating in such large-scale international projects and expressed confidence that the institution will honourably fulfil its responsibilities.

The Sustainable Development Solutions Network was launched in 2012. It is an initiative to promote practical solutions and realisation of the SDGs.

Earlier, the African Union Summit was held in Addis Ababa. The Ethiopian side proposed to hold the second African Climate Summit in the capital in 2025.
