UN General Assembly supports Kazakhstan’s initiative to establish a UN regional centre in Almaty

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution to establish a regional centre for sustainable development goals (SDGs). The initiative, introduced on behalf of Central Asian states by Kazakhstan, has garnered the support of 152 UN member states as co-sponsors, as reported by the Kazakhstan government.

This decision marks a major step in implementing the initiative first proposed by Kazakhstan’s president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly. The centre is planned to be housed in Almaty, within the newly established international organisations hub, where 18 UN agencies already operate.

The newly established facility will serve as a key platform for coordinating international and regional efforts, exchanging best practices, providing technical assistance, and implementing joint projects.

It will work closely with governments, international organisations, the private sector, and civil society to achieve tangible and accessible results.
