Egypt and Indonesia upgrade relations to strategic partnership

The two leaders discussed international issues of mutual interest

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto held a meeting in Cairo during which they signed a declaration to upgrade bilateral relations. This is reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

"Realising the historical relationship that has bound us for decades, the two leaders agreed to escalate their relationship to a strategic partnership level based on the values of justice, mutual respect, and mutual trust," as written in the joint statement.

It is noted that the agreement covers key areas: politics, economy, education, culture, humanitarian, and scientific and technical co-operation, as well as cooperation in food and energy security.

At the talks, the leaders discussed international issues of mutual interest. In addition, they emphasised interest in expanding inter-state ties.

Egypt was the third stop of the Indonesian president's Middle East tour, which began on 9 April. He has previously visited the UAE, with visits to Qatar and Jordan ahead. The meeting with his Emirati counterpart saw the adoption of eight bilateral cooperation agreements, including a memorandum on the construction of a floating solar power plant in Indonesia.
