Iran plans to modernise irrigation across 70,000 hectares of farmland
In a push to improve water efficiency amid worsening shortages, Iran’s Agriculture Ministry has set a target to install advanced irrigation systems on 70,000 hectares of agricultural land this Iranian year (from March 2025 to March 2026).
So far, approximately 3.1 million hectares of farmland in Iran have been upgraded with modern irrigation. Last year, nearly 30,000 hectares were equipped, surpassing 80 per cent of the ministry’s goal.
Funding for irrigation improvements has increased by 20 per cent in the public budget, as reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS. Sub-surface irrigation, known for its water-saving benefits, is one of Iran's prioritised destinations.
Earlier, in Iran's Markazi province, agricultural scientists have developed five new winter wheat varieties hat are resistant to drought, cold and lodging after a decade of research. These varieties yield 20-30 per cent more, mature faster and contain more protein. The development will help ensure food security and support agriculture in the face of climate change.
